Re:"Face on Mars" MGS MOC Release No. MOC2-283; Release date: 24 May 2001.

Dear Dr. Weiler:
On behalf of FACETS I want to thank you again for re-imaging the "face" on Mars and for posting the new images on the Internet. My client does have a few questions though. Can you please explain why your letter dated May 11th stated, in several places, that the images were posted on the Internet on April 19th when apparently they weren't posted until May 24th ? Also, if this data was publicly accessible prior to May 24th, on which specific "multiple public web sites" were they?

In the above context, my client is hereby requesting the ancillary data, which normally accompanies these images, to properly analyze the probability of artificiality. Of particular interest is the time and date on which E03-00824 was obtained. I have attached a list of the data requested. FACETS is also requesting the data used for the MOLA false-color contour image of the "face" as published on the NASA Headquarters website May 24th, in an article entitled "Unmasking the Face on Mars."

Also in your letter dated May 11, you refer to an interpretation of the new image data by Dr. Malin, and state that "...the Scientific advisory committees that formally advise NASA have not interpreted the Cydonia feature as evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence." FACETS requests that NASA provide it with copies of, or references to, any dated, authored opinions, reports, memos or articles, preferably peer-reviewed, created by Dr. Malin or said "advisory committees" regarding the new "face" image.

Further, on May 26th, Jim Garvin, chief scientist for NASA's Mars Exploration Program, told MSNBC.com that another Cydonia fly-over is scheduled for this month. My client requests that NASA, pursuant to the JPL agreement in 1998: 1) pre-announce the date of the "fly-over" in a prominent place on a public web site; 2) re-image specific locations in the area with the highest resolution possible; and 3) promptly release any such images in uncompressed form (preferably .gif or .tif format) with their ancillary data in a prominent place on a public web site. In a few days FACETS will be forwarding a list of five to ten additional areas in Cydonia and elsewhere for new high-resolution re-imaging.

Finally, FACETS looks forward to an expanding public participation in the NASA exploration of Mars.

Sincerely,

Peter A. Gersten
