If the Law of Confusion is in operation, it seems to be increasing in intensity. For those of us who are prepared to accept the existence of other intelligence in the universe, the reality of a deeper and more significant past for humanity, and a more meaningful and hopeful future, the evidence on the table already is compelling enough. But even mainstream scientists and media outfits, who control the world's information flow and funding and have thus far been able to keep these taboo topics out of the realm of accepted science, will find it difficult to continue to ignore recent developments.

For example, we have recently been inundated with new "revelations" about the increasingly likely possibility of liquid water and, hence, primitive life on Mars. While those following the real story know that water on Mars is perhaps the least interesting evidence for ET life, these recent announcements, which have received the mainstream stamp of approval, open up even the staunchest skeptics to ideas that were considered impossible only months ago. In this case the Law of Confusion serves to cull the ranks of the skeptics, or at least the "fence-sitters," bringing ever more individuals into a camp where "impossible" ideas--life on Mars, and by extension, the possibility of other intelligence in the universe--are no longer as unlikely.

Far from the hallowed halls of officialdom, in a relatively isolated wheat field in Wiltshire, England, another recent development pushes us one step closer to thinning out the ranks of the skeptics. In this case it is unclear who is following the Law of Confusion--is it a government agency or another intelligence altogether? Whatever the case, there is no denying that an East Kennet formation which appeared around July 2, 2000 makes it ever more difficult to ignore the inexplicable, decades old phenomenon of "crop circles."

The East Kennet crop circle, imprinted in a wheat field near Silbury Hill in England, apparently appeared overnight during the first week of July. Preliminary estimates place the circle's diameter at 180 feet. The internal square section covers roughly 19,500 of the formation's 25,500 total square feet. The downed wheat is woven and layered, as is typical of well made formations.

Keen observers familiar with the orthodox interpretation of the crop circle phenomenon (hoaxing with ropes and boards) will immediately note some perplexing aspects of this extraordinary formation. First, a typical hoaxed circle is created by placing a stake in the circle's center and tracing a 360 degree arc with a piece of rope. If this circle is hoaxed, the perpetrators somehow circumscribed it about a square--not an impossible feat, but one that increases the difficulty of the formation many fold. Second, according to initial reports the square contains 1600 individual "cells" of various, but regularly repeating sizes. This is not the relatively simple 780-square checkerboard pattern seen in the East Kennet's microchip-like precursor, the "Boustrophedon," which appeared in England on July 30, 1997. Rather, the East Kennet circle incorporates four different designs (one in each quadrant of the square), which presents an overall zigzagging pattern. Though probably not impossible to reproduce with a team of skilled "circlefakers," the intricate pattern would have required at least 80 passes with boards or rollers of varying sizes--a traverse of over two miles.

The true scientific test of whether the East Kennet formation is "genuine" may come from examination of its grain in laboratory settings. The electromagnetic anomalies noted by biophysicist W.C. Levengood's organization BLT Research represent the best evidence for a non-prosaic cause behind crop circles. In this case, even without supporting electromagnetic evidence it seems very unlikely to me that humans with strings and boards or rollers made the East Kennet formation, or most of the other complicated formations to appear recently. The only way to argue this conclusion is to ignore the phenomenon altogether, which the media has managed to do for some time. With the Law of Confusion in operation, however, more and more individuals who have learned to think for themselves are becoming aware of the true dilemmas the crop circle and other phenomena present.

While the snail's pace advance provided by the Law of Confusion is frustrating to those of us who simply want to see promising ideas like cold fusion get a fair trial in the court of science, or to see more scientists take UFOs and crop circles seriously, it is probably the only course of action that will work, given the current politicized state of science today. A little bit of progress is better than no progress at all.
